The 30-minute field test: setting paces without a lactate meter

Not every club has access to a lactate meter, and that's fine. There's a field method that only needs a stopwatch and a pool: the continuous 30-minute test.

The idea

The swimmer swims for 30 minutes at the steadiest effort possible, no final sprint. The distance covered, divided by time, gives an average speed used as an approximation of critical swim speed (CSS), roughly the pace the swimmer can hold over 1500m.

It's no coincidence that 30 minutes is the chosen duration. In threshold-testing protocols used in running and cycling, a continuous effort of around 30 minutes at stable intensity serves to check that lactate stays stable (the gap between minute 10 and minute 30 should not exceed 1 mmol/L). Swimming applies the same logic, just in field form: no blood draw, just the stopwatch.

How far you can trust it

This test gives a solid base for planning upcoming sessions, but it's still less precise than a proper lactate measurement. CSS is an approximation, not a direct read of what's happening inside the swimmer's body.

A concrete example: two swimmers can post the same average speed on this test with completely different metabolic profiles. One holds the pace almost entirely aerobically, the other is already starting to tip into a mixed zone by the end of the 30 minutes. The field test doesn't see that gap. The two-speed V4 test, with lactate sampling, does.

So the two tests aren't for the same moment in the season. The 30-minute test is perfect for regular monitoring, cheap to run, repeatable several times a month without it being a burden. The V4 test is better kept for the turning points, ahead of a preparation block for instance, when you need real clarity.

Turning it into training zones

Once you have the average speed, zones are calculated as a percentage of that reference speed, much like with V4: recovery zone around 90% or below, endurance zone just under threshold, mixed zone above it. A swimmer with a CSS of 1:40/100m, for instance, will have very different zone paces than a swimmer at 1:25/100m, even within the same training group.
